Isabella So

I am a Korean-Hong Kong interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores identity, memory and belonging through performance, food and storytelling. Rooted in community collaboration, my work often engages migrant and intergenerational groups to co-create participatory experiences that centre lived histories and cultural memory.

Food is central to her creative language: a material that transcends barriers of language and culture, opening pathways for intimacy and connection. Through shared meals, cooking and sensory performance, she creates spaces where strangers become participants, and where hospitality itself becomes an act of radical visibility for communities often marginalised in the UK cultural landscape.

Her recent project, Dishing Out Memories, an Arts Council England-funded immersive performance developed in collaboration with The Lowry, Touchstones Rochdale and New Earth Theatre, brought together live cooking, projection mapping and multilingual storytelling. The work was praised by audiences as 'a great springboard to a fuller, developed experience for ESEA communities around the North' and as 'feeling like being in someone's home.' The project included both performances and workshops, allowing participants to explore the role of food in shaping memory, identity and belonging.

Collaboration and international dialogue are key to Isabella's practice. As a British Council Venice Fellow, she represented the British Pavilion at the Biennale, an experience that broadened her perspective on cross-cultural exchange and deepened her commitment to connecting local stories with global contexts. These networks and residencies continue to inform her trajectory as they expand her practice across performance, projection design and socially engaged facilitation.

She wants her work to feel both intimate and expansive. Sharing a meal that starts around a kitchen table but grows into something larger, a space for cultural exchange, storytelling and hospitality as an act of resilience and joy.
