Kirsty Barlow
Kirsty is an immersive environment designer, creative producer and researcher whose practice explores how spatial design shapes emotional, social and sensory experience, creating environments that influence how people feel, connect and participate within a space.
Working across theatre, public space, festivals and live events, Kirsty designs immersive environments for storytelling, conversation and reflection. Her work ranges from large-scale promenade experiences and immersive performances to public installations, pavilions, and participatory spaces designed for workshops, discussions, and collective activity. Increasingly, her practice focuses on quiet spaces and sensory-calming environments that support rest, regulation, and accessibility.
Kirsty’s approach is rooted in sensory design, using sound, light, materiality and spatial composition to create emotionally resonant environments. Her research-led, collaborative practice brings together artists, communities and multidisciplinary teams to explore how immersive design can support social connection and more inclusive futures. As an autistic artist, her lived experience informs an ongoing interest in how spaces can soothe, overwhelm or liberate.
Recent projects include: Quiet Space Designer for Alternative Pride Festival (2025) and BEYOND Conference (2025); Associate Designer with Wild Rumpus on A Merry Misrule at Battersea Arts Centre (2025); and Creative Producer of Immersive Environments with Wild Rumpus across large-scale public projects, including Timber Festival (2023–24), Milton Keynes Midsummer Festival (2024) and Just So Festival (2023). Kirsty was a Linbury Prize for Stage Design Finalist (2019), is a co-founder of the North West Design Allotment, and is a 2026 British Pavilion Fellow for the British Council representing Lowry.
